Spend wheelie bin cash on the front line - Lib Dems

paul-tilsey.pngFrom Today's Birmingham Post: Two thirds of the £30 million set aside for the introduction of wheelie bins could be spent protecting front line council services, according to Birmingham Liberal Democrats.

Lib Dem leader Paul Tilsley says the £20 million awarded to the council by the government in November has not been legally ring-fenced for spending on refuse collection, and should be used to head off the worst effects of spending cuts.

In an alternative budget he also calls for an axe to be taken to the 70 full time union officials employed by the council, saving some £1.7 million, and demands the council accept a £2.1 million council tax benefit relief grant rather than cut benefits to the unemployed.

Coun Tilsley (Sheldon), who was council deputy leader until last May, has confirmed that the only condition on its refuse collection grant is that the bins are emptied every week for five years and that this is widely publicised.
